February in the Nature Classroom

While February is known to be full of paper hearts and chocolate, it is also bursting with early signs of Spring. Snowdrops have adapted to midwinter flowering and the delicate white flowers are welcome when they push through the hard, frosty ground.

It might still be cold and windy but what will the Spring weather look like? The 2nd of February is Groundhog Day. Why not make a project about these awesome creatures rather than having a one-day celebration? Learn about their life cycle. In all my life cycle resources, there are opportunities to sharpen both critical as well as creative thinking skills.

There is also a Groundhog Freebie, which will give you a little taste of what my design resources look like.

Bunnies might be a sign of Spring but you can introduce Rabbits into your classroom in February, which is the Adopt a Rescued Rabbit Month. Every year thousands of pet rabbits are abandoned and even if you do not intend to adopt a rabbit, they are fascinating creatures. A project about rabbits will reveal some fascinating facts and challenge your students’ thinking. What can you invent inspired by their long ears?

How can you design a CUDDLY robot? Soft Robots is filled with engaging science activities perfect for design challenges and Valentine’s Day celebrations!

Towards the end of the month, 27th of February, you can celebrate one of the most loved animals on International Polar Bear Day. The day before is the start of National Invasive Species Week – 26th Feb to 1st March. Perfect to explore the importance of biodiversity and also learn about how a species like sea urchins can seriously affect the balance in an ecosystem. Here your students will also learn about sea otters’ role in restoring the kelp forest’s balance.

You’ll find the resources here, here or here.

Encourage your students to fall in Love in Wild Places this February!
