March in the Nature Classroom

World Seagrass Day – March 1st

March starts with World Seagrass Day. This day was introduced in 2022 by the UN’s General Assembly. Seagrasses are flowering plants that are found in shallow waters from the tropics to the Arctic Circle. Seagrasses are biologically rich habitats that provide food and shelter to thousands of species of fish, seahorses and turtles. (In contrast, seaweed is a type of algae and there is a special day dedicated to celebrating seaweed in April).

A great project for the classroom is to explore the “Great Blue Wall”. This is a project that ten countries in the Indian Ocean are undertaking. It focuses on protecting seagrasses as well as coral reefs and mangroves. A great chance the mix science with geography!

World Wildlife Day – March 3rd

Learn about the importance of biodiversity and celebrate the ways wildlife makes our planet beautiful. A project about endangered animals is also perfect for March.

Save a Spider Day – March 14th

Are spiders spooky? Well, this resource is not only great for Halloween. Inventing a toy inspired by jumping spiders is fun and learning about diving bell spiders is fascinating.

National Panda Day – March 16th

World Frog Day – March 20th

Frogs are part of Spring and also the most amazing inspiration for biomimicry projects. The focus on this day is to raise awareness for frogs and other amphibians. Sadly, many frog species are disappearing.

Easter is celebrated towards the end of March – Good Friday is on the 29th. A project involving Oviparous Animals is popular. Egglaying animals are so fascinating!

I hope you have a wonderful time sharing the wonders of nature!
